Russian Engineer Sentenced to 16 Years for Spying for Ukraine

A court in Sverdlovsk has handed down a 16-year prison sentence to Daniel Mukhametov, a 32-year-old engineer accused of espionage for Ukraine. Employed at Uralvagonzavod, one of the world’s largest tank manufacturers located in Nizhny Tagil, Mukhametov was found guilty of passing sensitive military and technical information to Ukrainian intelligence, a serious breach of national security.

In a case that highlights the ongoing tensions arising from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, both Mukhametov and his wife, Viktoria, were arrested by Russia’s FSB security services in 2023. The court revealed that while Daniel partially admitted his guilt during the proceedings, Viktoria Mukhametova received a sentence of 12.5 years for similar charges.

This trial is part of a broader crackdown by Russian authorities on individuals accused of espionage and those opposing the government’s actions in Ukraine.
