EFCC Plans to Arrest Obaseki After His Tenure Ends

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has revealed that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is planning to arrest him after his term ends on November 14. Speaking at the EdoBEST National Results-Sharing Session in Abuja on Thursday, Obaseki stated that he received information about the EFCC’s intentions to detain him over allegations of fraud.

However, the governor expressed no fear over the potential arrest or any investigations into his administration. He attributed the accusations against him to personal vendettas from individuals opposed to his achievements. Obaseki maintained that he has nothing to hide and would even be willing to turn himself in should the EFCC reach out.

“I hear that the EFCC will pick me up next week after my tenure. Wherever they keep me, I’ll spend time doing research,” Obaseki said. He highlighted several legacy projects initiated during his time in office, emphasizing his focus on reforms that directly benefited the people of Edo State.

He added, “Why should I be afraid? I focused on what I believe in, and today, you can see the accomplishments. What happens after that is beyond my control.”

Obaseki accused his political opponents of jealousy over his administration’s achievements, claiming that some in the state have been motivated by bitterness and envy. Despite the claims against him, the governor remained confident in the legacy he leaves behind, particularly in improving the state’s civil service and focusing on the welfare of the people.

On the recent gubernatorial election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Monday Okpebholo, as the winner of the September 2024 race, defeating his closest rival from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Asue Ighodalo.
