Paraguayan President Hospitalized After Falling Ill at G20 Summit

Paraguayan President Santiago Peña was hospitalized on Monday after falling ill while attending the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Peña, 46, was taken to Samaritano Hospital in the Botafogo neighborhood after experiencing what officials described as “malaise” in the afternoon. Authorities confirmed that he was treated promptly and is now in stable condition.

A statement from the Paraguayan government revealed that Peña had undergone diagnostic tests, and his health was later described as stable. The hospital issued a bulletin assuring the public that the president is “doing well,” adding that he is awaiting further results.

While some media outlets speculated that Peña may have experienced chest pains, this was not officially confirmed. Paraguay’s Vice President Pedro Alliana also provided an update via social media, stating that Peña was “doing well” and recovering in the hospital.

Although Paraguay is not a member of the G20, President Peña had been invited to the summit by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Before his health scare, Peña had been engaging in discussions with world leaders about Paraguay’s economic issues, including efforts to alleviate poverty.

Witnesses reported that Peña was transported by ambulance from the summit venue, and the incident has raised concerns about his health as the global leaders’ meeting continues.
