Ondo Government Orders Evacuation as Devastating Floods Submerge Homes

Heavy rains in Ondo town, Ondo State, triggered severe flooding on Friday, destroying property worth millions of naira. The downpour, which lasted for hours, submerged homes and vehicles, forcing many residents to flee their houses in affected areas such as Itanla, Oka, Odo Ijomu, Bethlehem, and the Akure-Ondo Expressway.

The state government has swiftly responded by ordering the evacuation of those in the flood-stricken zones to prevent further damage. Fortunately, no lives were lost during the incident.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Oyeniyi Oseni, on Saturday, the government confirmed that immediate action is being taken to curb the impact of the flood. Oseni revealed that Amphibious Excavators have been deployed to erosion-prone areas for dredging to prevent future occurrences.

He also attributed the flooding to unauthorized developments along waterways, particularly in the Fagun and Ife Road areas. The ministry plans to work closely with other governmental bodies to address the illegal constructions contributing to the problem.
