Abia State Polytechnic Renamed After Late Former Governor Ogbonnaya Onu

In a heartfelt tribute, Abia State Governor Alex Otti has announced the renaming of Abia State Polytechnic in Aba to “Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic” in memory of the late former Governor Christopher Ogbonnaya Onu. This decision, shared in a statement by the Abia State Government on Facebook, honors Onu’s impactful legacy and lasting contributions to education and state development.

Governor Otti reflected on Onu’s influence at his burial in Uburu, Ebonyi State, describing him as a leader who shaped Abia State’s educational landscape and contributed significantly to national unity. “Dr. Onu’s legacy extends beyond his political achievements,” Otti noted. “As the first democratically elected Governor of Abia State, a Minister, and a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), his humility and grace were truly inspiring.”

During his term from 1992 to 1993, Onu founded the Abia State Polytechnic in Aba, alongside other institutions, including the Abia State College of Education (Technical) in Arochukwu and the Federal University of Agriculture, now Michael Okpara University of Agriculture. These educational pillars underscored his dedication to economic and educational advancement, with campuses established across Abia’s senatorial districts.

Reflecting on Onu’s unifying leadership, Governor Otti recalled how Onu, in 1999, sacrificed his presidential ambitions to preserve national unity. Known for his dedication to truth and the country’s development, Dr. Onu demonstrated his commitment to Nigeria in every role he undertook.

“Dr. Onu’s story is a testament to the power of dreams and determination. We will continue to honor his memory by advancing his legacy and values with the same passion and integrity he exemplified,” Otti wrote.
