Absence of Judge Postpones High-Profile Trial of PIDOMNigeria Blogger Isaac Bristol

Published

The trial of Isaac Bristol, a popular Nigerian blogger known as “PIDOMNigeria,” faced a delay on Tuesday as Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja was absent. Set to appear in court on multiple charges, Bristol’s hearing could not proceed because Justice Nwite, who has been actively serving since July, began a scheduled two-week vacation this week. The trial has now been rescheduled to January 22, 2025.

Justice Nwite, who granted Bristol bail in September under strict conditions, required a bond of N5 million and a surety whose tax clearance certificate and verified address were mandatory for bail validation. Bristol, arrested on August 5 in Rivers State, has remained in custody pending the fulfillment of his bail conditions, which include surrendering his international passport to prevent unauthorized travel. Justice Nwite has previously stressed that failure to adhere to these requirements could lead to the revocation of his bail.

Bristol’s arrest followed allegations from police spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who accused him of publishing materials that reportedly undermined government integrity. On September 3, Bristol was formally charged with nine criminal counts involving the alleged release of sensitive government information, tampering with evidence, and breaches of money laundering and cybercrime regulations. Key accusations include claims that Bristol shared documents alleging a substantial financial release by President Bola Tinubu’s administration to the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), a figure he reportedly exaggerated from N24.1 billion to N90 billion. Bristol, however, denies all allegations against him.
