Escaped Inmate from Borno Prison Recaptured After Flood Disaster

The Borno State Police Command has successfully recaptured Abubakar Mohammed, one of the inmates who escaped during last week’s flood that led to the collapse of the Nigerian Correctional Service facility in Maiduguri.

Reports from Daily Trust highlighted how the prison’s perimeter wall gave way during the flood, allowing several inmates to flee.

Initially, prison authorities denied any escapes. However, they later confirmed that 274 inmates had gone missing following the disaster.

On Tuesday, Borno Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, confirmed the arrest of Mohammed, a 27-year-old inmate who had been serving time for culpable homicide before his escape.

“On September 15, 2024, at approximately 3:00 PM, a resident of Bulakara Ward, Gubio LGA, reported seeing Abubakar Mohammed in Gubio town after he had escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Center in Maiduguri due to the flood’s damage to the prison fence,” SP Wakil stated.
