Gunmen Strike Plateau Mining Site, Claiming Four Lives

Four young individuals lost their lives in Plateau State when gunmen targeted a mining site in the Bokkos Local Government Area on Friday night. The attack occurred around 9 PM in the Batura community, where the victims were working.

According to Sabastine Magit, President of the Butura Youth Movement, the gunmen, who spoke in the Fulani dialect, launched an unprovoked assault on the youths. In addition to the fatalities, five others sustained injuries during the incident before the attackers fled the scene.

Magit identified the deceased as Bwefuk Musa, 21; Klingshak Dickson, 21; Promise Joshua, 20; and Nyam Abaka, 20. He stated, “In yet another unprovoked assault on members of the Butura community, armed terrorists opened fire on innocent youths working at a mining site near the villages of Kuba and Maikatako.”

The assault happened just days after a similar tragedy in the village of Wumat, where five family members, including a pregnant woman, were killed. Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen executed a swift operation on October 10, escaping before military personnel at a nearby checkpoint could respond.

This latest attack marks a troubling trend of violence against the Butura community, with over 20 members reportedly killed in the past month, all attributed to identified Fulani assailants. Efforts to reach Alabo Alfred, the spokesman for the Plateau State Command, and Major Samson Zhakom, the spokesperson for the Military Taskforce, were unsuccessful as calls went unanswered.
