Israel Bars UN Chief from Entry Over Iran Response

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has been officially barred from entering Israel following his response to Iran’s missile attacks. Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz harshly criticized Guterres, branding him an “anti-Israel secretary-general who supports terrorists,” and declared him persona non grata. Katz emphasized that anyone who does not strongly condemn Iran’s attack has no right to enter Israel, condemning Guterres for what he described as a pro-Iranian stance since the outbreak of the conflict.

Following Iran’s launch of roughly 180 missiles into Israel, Guterres condemned the ongoing violence but did not specifically address Iran’s role in the assault. Instead, he called for an immediate ceasefire in the region. This attack marks an escalation in a long-running conflict, which intensified over the past year due to Hamas’s actions and rising tensions between Hezbollah and Israel.

In response to Hamas’s major assault on October 7, which led to around 1,200 deaths and the capture of 251 hostages, Israel launched a military offensive in Gaza. According to the health ministry in Gaza, operated by Hamas, the ongoing military campaign has resulted in 41,689 casualties.

The conflict has further strained relations between Israel and the United Nations, particularly regarding the UN’s operations in Gaza and the West Bank. Disagreements over the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) continue to fuel tensions. Earlier this year, Israel accused UNRWA staff of involvement in the October 7 attacks, leading to an investigation. Although international funders initially paused their support, funding was later restored after the dismissal of nine UNRWA staff members allegedly linked to the incident. UNRWA has also publicly condemned Israeli airstrikes that have killed several of its employees in Gaza.
