Lagos Driver Sets Himself, LASTMA Officer, and Bus on Fire

A commercial bus driver in Lagos attempted to evade arrest in a shocking incident that involved setting himself, a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officer, and his vehicle ablaze. The violent confrontation unfolded on Tuesday morning and has raised serious concerns about traffic enforcement in the region.

According to LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the driver of a Volkswagen T4 commercial bus, license plate LSD 355 CK, became aggressive when officers stopped him for a traffic violation in the Cele area while heading towards Mile-2.

In an alarming twist, the driver and his conductor allegedly poured petrol on LASTMA officials and physically attacked them. One officer suffered severe burns and was quickly taken to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.

Bakare-Oki emphasized the agency’s dedication to upholding traffic regulations and ensuring public safety, referencing the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018. He urged all drivers to comply with traffic laws and treat LASTMA officials with respect, warning that any acts of violence or intimidation would be met with strict penalties. LASTMA remains committed to creating a safer driving environment for all road users.
