Man Climbs High-Tension Power Pole, Calls for Tinubu’s Resignation

A man protesting against President Bola Tinubu was detained by the Adamawa State Police after scaling a 33KV high-tension electricity pole to demand the president’s resignation. The dramatic incident unfolded in the Mayo-Belwa Local Government Area and lasted from Friday morning, September 27, to Saturday evening, September 28.

The man, whose identity remains undisclosed, refused to come down from the pole, vowing he would only descend once Tinubu stepped down from office. After hours of tension, he was eventually rescued by locals with police assistance and was taken into custody in Yola, the state capital.

State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguruje, confirmed the man’s arrest, stating, “The Command will parade him today (Monday) for attempting suicide,” noting that suicide attempts are a criminal offense under Nigerian law. Nguruje added, “We are going to charge him to court,” emphasizing the police’s responsibility to safeguard lives and prosecute such cases.

The protester had climbed the pole along the Yola-Jalingo highway during the busy Mayo-Belwa market day. Local residents worked with the police to safely bring him down on Saturday night, concluding a standoff that had captured the attention of the community.
