Obaseki Grants Clemency to 10 Inmates, Prepares to Hand Over Power to Okpebholo

Outgoing Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has granted clemency to 10 inmates nearing the end of their sentences. This decision, made in line with his prerogative of mercy, comes as Obaseki prepares to formally hand over power to Governor-elect Monday Okpebholo, who won the September 2024 election. Among those pardoned are Igwe Kelechukwu, Esazobor Ohioze, and Gift Osaretun, marking a compassionate move by Obaseki as he closes his term.

The pardon followed recommendations by the Edo State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, led by retired Justice P.O. Isibor. Obaseki’s clemency aims to provide a fresh start for inmates with less than a year left on their sentences, offering them a chance to reintegrate into society.

The official handover to Okpebholo will occur today at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City. The event, which marks a significant transition for Edo State, will be attended by top political figures, including prominent APC governors and Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Notably, Obaseki will not be present at the inauguration, citing a lack of invitation as the reason for his absence.

This transition signals a new chapter for Edo State, with Okpebholo taking the reins to implement his vision for the region, supported by an array of distinguished leaders and local supporters.
