Osinbajo’s Former Aide to Obasanjo: Stop Mocking Successive Presidents

Laolu Akande, a former spokesperson for ex-Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, has called on former President Olusegun Obasanjo to refrain from making jest of Nigeria’s past and current presidents. Akande’s statement came in response to comments made by Obasanjo during a lecture at the Chinua Achebe Leadership Forum held at Yale University.

While addressing the forum, Obasanjo described Nigeria’s current state as deeply troubling, pointing to widespread corruption, mediocrity, and injustice as root causes of the nation’s challenges. He remarked, “Nigeria’s situation is bad… The failing state status of Nigeria is glaringly indicated and manifested for every honest person to see through the consequences of pervasive corruption, mediocrity, immorality, mismanagement, and other forms of iniquity.” Despite painting a grim picture, Obasanjo added that hope for Nigeria still exists.

Reacting via his X handle on Saturday, Akande criticized Obasanjo’s tone, urging him to focus on constructive engagement rather than ridiculing the efforts of successive leaders. He reiterated his stance during an appearance on Inside Sources, a Channels Television program, where he highlighted the deeper systemic issues plaguing Nigeria’s leadership.

Akande explained, “The Nigerian situation suffers from political leadership challenges, but even more serious is the deeper problem that itself produces these leadership challenges. Former presidents like General Obasanjo should aim to provide solutions instead of merely mocking others.”

Obasanjo’s remarks, which included veiled references to past administrations such as “Baba-go-slow” and “Emilokan,” have sparked debates, with many Nigerians questioning whether his critiques are helpful or divisive. Akande’s call for more measured dialogue underscores the need for elder statesmen to offer constructive pathways toward resolving Nigeria’s leadership crisis.
