South Africa’s Unemployment Rate Declines for First Time in 2024

Published

South Africa’s unemployment rate saw its first decrease in 2024, falling to 32.1% in the third quarter, down from 33.5% in the previous quarter, according to the country’s official statistics agency. This drop marks a welcome shift in the labor market, as the nation grapples with persistent unemployment issues, particularly affecting women and the youth.

The latest data from Statistics South Africa’s Quarterly Labour Force Survey reveals a significant increase in employment, with 294,000 more people finding jobs during the quarter. At the same time, the number of unemployed individuals dropped by 373,000. Key sectors contributing to job growth include community and social services, construction, trade, mining, and transport.

While this decrease in unemployment is a positive development, youth unemployment remains a pressing concern, though it saw a slight decline from 46.6% in the second quarter of 2024 to 45.5% in the third quarter.

Despite these gains, the country’s economy continues to face structural challenges and weak growth, which the World Bank cites as barriers to addressing deep-seated poverty and inequality. These issues continue to affect more than 60% of South Africa’s population.
