Surgeon Returns to Nigeria After 25 Years in the U.S., Committed to Transforming Healthcare

Nigerian associate professor of orthopaedic surgery, Dr. Julius Oni, has returned to Nigeria after spending 25 years in the United States, driven by his commitment to improve healthcare for Nigerians. In a viral video, Oni explained his decision, saying, “I reverse Japa from the U.S. to Nigeria 6 weeks ago.” The term ‘Japa,’ a Nigerian slang, refers to emigration in search of better opportunities.

After years of living in the U.S., Oni left his role at Johns Hopkins, sold his home, and relocated to Nigeria with his family. His goal? To provide Nigerians with access to world-class orthopaedic care. “I know some may think I’m crazy, but I’m just a man full of conviction,” Oni shared.

As the CEO of a private equity firm, XCITE Capital, and founder of DOC Medical Nigeria, Oni has already begun offering high-quality musculoskeletal care to patients. His new facility aims to reduce the need for Nigerians to travel abroad for medical treatment, as Oni believes Nigerian patients deserve the same level of care available in other countries.

The impact of his mission is already evident, with patients traveling from across Africa and even the UK to seek treatment at his facility. Oni has also initiated free medical clinics and recently performed his first series of surgeries since returning.
