Chelsea’s Reece James Faces Extended Absence, Out Until 2025 After Hamstring Injury

Published

Chelsea captain Reece James is expected to remain sidelined until 2025 after suffering another hamstring injury, with reports suggesting his recovery may extend into the new year. A scan conducted earlier this week has yet to provide a clear timeline for the defender’s return, but Chelsea have pledged to offer both physical and emotional support during his rehabilitation.

The Telegraph reported on Thursday that Chelsea has not confirmed an exact date for James’ comeback, although it is understood that the 24-year-old may not return until 2025, depending on how his recovery progresses. This latest setback is not considered a recurrence of his previous injury, though James has faced consistent issues with his hamstrings over the past year.

Head coach Enzo Maresca stressed the importance of supporting James through his recovery, stating that the club’s focus is on a gradual return rather than pushing for an immediate comeback. With James having only played 654 minutes since taking on the captaincy 15 months ago, this ongoing injury has been particularly difficult for him to accept.

James has spoken openly about the emotional toll that injuries have taken on him. Last year, he shared his struggles with negative comments during his recovery from hamstring surgery, noting that while he has received support, there has also been an overwhelming amount of criticism. “I’m happiest when I’m playing football,” he said, thanking his supporters for their understanding despite the challenges.

In response to his most recent injury setback, James took to social media to thank his fans for their continued support. “This message is to the people that understand and have respect for what I’m going through… your support and kind words go further than you could ever imagine,” he wrote. “I’m doing OK, been better and also been worse. Another challenge ahead accepted. Eventually, I’ll come out on top. Against all odds.”

As Chelsea prepares for a busy December with nine matches, including crucial Premier League fixtures against Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur, the club remains committed to ensuring James makes a full recovery before making his return to action.
