Kenya Court Sentences Killers of Olympian Benjamin Kiplagat to 35 Years

A Kenyan court has sentenced two men to 35 years in prison for the murder of Ugandan Olympic athlete Benjamin Kiplagat. Following a nine-month trial, the Eldoret High Court found Peter Ushuru Khalumi, 30, and David Ekai Lokere, 25, guilty of fatally stabbing the 34-year-old steeplechaser.

Judge Reuben Nyakundi highlighted compelling evidence from CCTV footage, which captured the men as they “intentionally” killed Kiplagat. The judge described the crime as both premeditated and cruel, and despite a heartfelt plea from Kiplagat’s family for life sentences, Nyakundi opted for a 35-year term, underscoring the brutal nature of the attack.

The two suspects were arrested shortly after Kiplagat’s body was found in his car on the outskirts of Eldoret on New Year’s Eve, with a fatal neck wound. Kiplagat was a prominent figure in international steeplechase, representing Uganda in several Olympics and World Championships. His untimely death sent shockwaves through the athletics community, prompting an outpouring of tributes from fans and fellow athletes alike.

Kiplagat’s career was marked by significant achievements, including a silver medal at the 2008 World Junior Championships and a bronze at the 2012 African Championships. He also competed in both the 2012 London Olympics and the 2016 Rio Olympics, solidifying his legacy in the sport.
