Malacia Marks Comeback After 17 Months with Manchester United’s Under-21s

After a prolonged 17-month absence due to injury, Tyrell Malacia made his return to competitive football in Manchester United’s Under-21 side during their EFL Trophy match against Huddersfield Town. The 25-year-old left-back, who had been sidelined since June 2023 following a knee injury during the Netherlands’ Nations League final, played the first 45 minutes of the game.

Malacia, a £13 million signing from Feyenoord, faced a much longer recovery than initially expected, undergoing two knee surgeries. His planned return in February was also postponed as his recovery became more complex. Before his injury, Malacia had made 39 appearances for Manchester United during the 2022-23 season, marking an impressive debut year.

In the match, which ended with a 4-1 defeat for United’s Under-21s, Malacia’s performance showed signs of promise. He showcased his trademark surging run early in the game and began to regain his rhythm. Though he remained cautious and played within himself, Malacia displayed sportsmanship by offering a friendly tap to Huddersfield’s Rhys Healey after a physical encounter.

The defender’s appearance in the EFL Trophy match was also watched by several key figures, including technical director Jason Wilcox and first-team coach Darren Fletcher. While Malacia’s return to the pitch is a positive step forward, it remains uncertain when he will be ready to rejoin the senior team after such a long injury layoff.

As Malacia continues his recovery, Manchester United’s Under-21s will face Altrincham in the National League Cup on 19 November, giving Malacia more opportunities to build up his fitness.

Meanwhile, new head coach Ruben Amorim, who recently joined the club, visited the Carrington training ground where several players, including Luke Shaw and Mason Mount, were undergoing rehabilitation for their injuries. Amorim is set to begin serious training sessions next week, with United’s international players expected to return in the coming days ahead of his first match in charge against Ipswich Town on 24 November.
